There are several possible meanings of the Sac Indian word "Ottumwa."  Two commonly accepted meanings are "place of perseverance or self will" and "land of rippling waters."  Either of them probably sums up the area quite well.

The city began, in 1845, with three stores, a tin shop, blacksmith shop, tailor shop, two hotels, a whiskey shop, and bout 15 log houses.  There was a jail but no churches or schools.  The town really began to grow in 1848 and by 1854 it had become a rather substantial community.  In 1860 Ottumwa had a population of 1,632 which grew to over 5,000 by 1870.  Today (according to the 2000 census) there are 24, 998 residents of the community.

Taking the history of the community into consideration and looking at where the community is now allows for the appreciation of the vision of the leaders of the town, whether that is the governmental agencies of groups of people promoting the community like the Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitor Bureau who’s job it is to let people know about all the things there are to see and do in the community.

Whether you are coming to Ottumwa for pleasure or business you can get information on the available activities and events from the CVB on such things as dining, lodging, shopping, golf and year-round festivals, concerts, theatre and entertainment.  Even though you might be in for work, enjoy the beautiful City of Bridges at the end of the day.

Here’s the story of how it all began. Rube's was started by a man names Glen Rubenbauer in 1973 in a tavern in the little town of Montour, Iowa.  In the 2000 census Montour had a population of 285 people, not a thriving city by any means, but a friendly small town in Iowa with a great steakhouse serving large steaks for people from all over the country. 

Along with the restaurant Rube branched out in 1992 and started Rube's Meat Company which is across the street from the restaurant in Montour.  Because of the quality and size of the steaks people wanted to be able to take some home with them or send them to friends and family.  Now these delicious hand-cut premium steaks are being shipped across the entire continental U.S.  What an accomplishment for a little tavern in a little town!

In 1993, Rube retired and Gary, Jeff, and Matt Anderson bought the restaurant.  They expanded the business to include a restaurant in Waukee, Iowa, a town just 17 miles from the state Capital of Des Moines in 1999.

Since its tiny tavern beginning, Rube’s has grown to seat nearly 520 people with over 16 entrees from which to choose.  Now that’s a restaurant worth visiting!

From its humble beginning Rube’s has become known world wide.  It has been named as “one of the 8 favorite places in the world” to visit by the Boston Globe and recipient of the Iowa Beef Backer Award.  On top of that Travelocity awarded Rube’s the “Local Secrets, Big finds” award.  No small thing when you consider between www.Travelocity.com and www.IowaBeautiful.com millions of people read about Rube’s on a daily basis!

Ray’s wife, Anne, supports his desire to build the field although she is skeptical she knows that this is a family that depends on each other to get through the rough times, just like in real life, this family has dreams.  In the end, Ray finds his father and they play catch as the long line of cars begin approaching the baseball field with people to watch the game.

The Lansing family farm, with its quaint, and oh so recognizable house (because of the movie) has opened up an opportunity for families to share a dream and enjoy an outing together.

The movie was released in 1989 and has become a classic in many ways.  It has all the necessary triggers to bring you into the emotion of the time, the dreams and desires, the satisfaction of success and the joy of family.  The movie was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Music, Original Score, Best Picture and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. The Lansing family farm has left the field for you to bat a few balls, play a game of catch, run around the bases or sit and watch from the bleachers.
